Criselda Kwambai Rejected as Elgeyo Marakwet County Attorney

The Elgeyo-Marakwet County Government has rejected the nomination of a lawyer who worked in Deputy President William Ruto's case at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Criselda Kwambai's appointment as the County Attorney was dismissed on the account that she possessed limited knowledge in Constitutional matters.

The lawyer, who works at Katwa and Kemboi advocates, was an investigations assistant in the ICC cases involving Ruto and journalist Joshua Sang.

According to a report prepared by the County Assembly, the lawyer's application for the top job was rejected after he failed to exhibit enough knowledge about the working of the county.

The Assembly particularly indicated that Kwambai did not appreciate the need to have the post of county printer and that she failed to meet the minimum requirements.

“A person shall be qualified for appointment as a county attorney if such a person has had at least seven years of relevant professional experience," stated the assembly.

The selection committee was, however, criticised for the decision to reject Ms Kwambai since it halted the county's aim of achieving gender parity.

“We were close to fulfilling the requirements of the two-thirds gender rule but unfortunately, the county assembly rejected the name of the only woman on the list,” complained deputy governor Gabriel Lagat.
