CS Nkaissery Sets Condition for University Police

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery has responded to security enhancement demands by Kenyan Universities. The Admnistrations had demanded that the Government post more police officers to their Institutions. The CS insisted that the police will be posted when the universities put up Police Stations.

The number of police posted will depend on student population but the officers will not be paid by the institutions. Nkaissery encouraged them to hire more security personnel to supplement what the government will provide in order to enhance security surveillance and damage control.

Nkaissery was speaking during a meeting with university leaders in regards to sustainable peace and security achievement within universities. This comes after the horrible attack that took place in Garrisa University where 147 people were killed in the terror attack.

Nkaissery said it's unfortunate terrorists have turned to soft spots but he insisted that it is everyone's individual responsibility to enhance security.

Olive Mugenda, Vice Chancellor Kenyatta University said the institution has trained 20 rapid response personnel to work with the police in emergency situations and currently has 46 officers within the University. Kenyatta University is in the process of hiring sniffer and attack dogs to enhance security.

Universities have increased security measures by installing CCTV surveillance cameras monitoring anyone coming in and going out of the learning institutions.

This comes after frequent terror attacks targeting universities have been recorded among other security threats.
