Dadaab Residents Protest Against Humanitarian Agencies

Normal activities were brought to a complete standstill during the morning hours of Monday, at Dadaab, Garissa county after residents took to the streets demonstrating against humanitarian agencies.

The group of about 500 locals carrying placards and posters marched towards gate of the UNHCR regional headquarters and pitched camp, vowing not to leave until their grievances were heard.

This brought all operations at the refugee camp in the area which is the biggest in the world to a stop.

The demonstrators condemned what they say is an operation to get rid of the locals working for World Food Program and replace them with people from other counties.

They claimed that contacts for 13 locals had been terminated and their jobs given to people from elsewhere.

They further added that they, being the hosts of the United Nations relief programs set in the area, are entitled to job opportunities.

Speaking to The Nation, head of operations for World Food Programme, Louis Sowe refuted the claims, insisting that the agency uses normal procedures to hire and fire.
