Daisy Korir Falls Sick at Lang'ata Prison

One of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) officials who had been sentenced to one month in prison is reported to have fallen sick on Tuesday.

Daisy Korir, who was sent to Lang'ata Prison, developed stomach complication and started vomiting shortly before taking porridge which had been served for breakfast.

Ms Korir who suffers from ulcers is said to have been disturbed by a meal of Githeri and Sukumawiki which had been served the previous night after she arrived at the prison.

Speaking to a group of Members of Parliament who had visited her, the KMPDU treasurer said that she was given drugs and recovered from the complications despite feeling weak due to the effects of the prison stay.

“I was weak because I suffer from ulcers but I am now strong having been given some medicine. I have the resolve to finish my term,” she stated.

Confirming the report, Lang'ata prison warder Olivia Onyango affirmed that Ms Korir had even skipped an event meant to celebrate the Valentine's Day.

“She was to join other inmates for a special Valentine’s event here in prison but she couldn’t because she has ulcers and started vomiting. She has been treated and she is resting,” explained Onyango.

The doctors'union officials were jailed on Monday for contempt of court after failing to call off the strike which has now entered its 73rd day.

On Wednesday, however, the Court of Appeal ordered for their immediate release following an appeal filed by lawyers affiliated with the CORD coalition.
