Deputy Governor Embarks on Teaching Students

A Deputy Governor has reportedly embarked on using part of his time to teach students owing to the lack of teachers in the Northern Kenya region.

Wajir Deputy Governor Abdihafid Yarrow according to KTN first attends to the residents after which he takes time to prepare for classwork, before proceeding to class to teach.

According to the Deputy Governor who is not a professional teacher, he is troubled by the hunger for education expressed by the students  despite the lack of teachers in the area.

Other former secondary school students are also said to be taking upon themselves to try and help the worrying students cover the syllabus.

The students who are due to sit for their national exams in 5 months time are said to be a worried lot even as most of their teachers have vowed not to go back to the region following constant security threats witnessed in the region.

Rising concerns on the safety of teachers in the region emerged in November 2014, after al-shabaab linked militants attacked a bus ferrying teachers in Mandera, killing atleast 28 of them who were allegedly non locals, with the situation being aggravated by the Garissa University College attack that claimed 149 lives.

The teachers Unions and the government  have locked horns over the safety of their members, with the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General being on record urging his teachers not to resume duty in the Northern Kenya region.

Majority of the teachers have defied the governments directive to return to work.
