Differences over Joint Nominations Threaten to Break NASA

Major differences in the National Super Alliance (NASA) have emerged after ODM Director of Campaigns Junet Mohamed announced that the Orange party will not allow affiliate parties in the coalition to field candidates in its strongholds.

The legislator went ahead and listed the strongholds as Coast, North-eastern, Nairobi, upper Eastern, Nyanza and Western regions.

Mr Mohamed emphasised the point stating: “It is important that these matters are also discussed and the position reiterated at the highest levels of the coalition.”

However, the announcement by the ODM Director of Campaigns has been met with resistance from leaders of the affiliate parties who questioned the authority of ODM in NASA.

Wiper Secretary-General Hassan Omar stated that no individual parties in NASA had the powers to order others around.

Omar added that Wiper would field candidates for all elective posts and oppose the joint nominations idea.

A section of leaders in NASA has been rooting for joint nominations while others in Wiper and Ford Kenya have vehemently opposed the plan.

The issue of nominations remains to be the bone of contention in NASA and according to political pundits, if the matter is not well-resolved in could lead to a fallout in the coalition.
