Doctors to Take Action If Government Fails to Pay Them For Strike Period

Doctors have threatened to take action if the government fails to pay them for the months they were on strike.

Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Secretary General Ouma Oluga demanded that the medics be paid by March 31 failure to which they would take unspecified action.

Oluga accused the government of failing to honour the recently signed Return to Work Formula which prohibited against the victimisation of the doctors.

“I am giving the government only up to Friday to withdraw all those circulars. Should the salaries not be paid by March 31, Kenyans should know that the Health CS does not want the strike to end,” he remarked.

According to the doctors, the government's refusal to release their salaries was an indication that it was not ready to end the health crisis in the country.

The Union's statement came after reports indicated that officials at the Ministry of Health had instructed counties to withhold doctors' salaries for the 100 days they had downed their tools.

The same was echoed by Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu who maintained that the doctors would not be remunerated yet they had not worked for more than three months.

“You cannot demand to be paid for what you have not worked for! Simple and clear,” Mailu was quoted.

A week ago, the medics signed an agreement with the National and County governments to end the industrial action which had paralysed operations in public hospitals.

Among the clauses in the deal is one restricting the victimisation of the doctors as well as seeking withdrawal of all disciplinary cases against the medical practitioners.
