Don't Arrest Reformed Mungiki Members - Uhuru Tells Chiefs

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday ordered chiefs and other government officials not to arrest ex-Mungiki members who have reformed.

Speaking in Wiyumiririe, Laikipia County during a mass voter registration campaign, Kenyatta told chiefs to allow reformed Mungiki members to pick their identification cards (IDs) as they seek to register as voters.

"I do not want to hear that chiefs are arresting youth because of their past mistakes. Youth should collect their IDs freely without fear. And I will follow up on that," the President affirmed.

The Head of State urged youth to register in large numbers so that they could exercise their democratic right and elect leaders who can effect change in their lives,

Mr Kenyatta added, "Young people, do not agree to be used by these leaders to fight each other. Remember that while you lose an eye fighting each other, leaders will be drinking at your local bar.”

The President has been moving around the country in areas perceived to be key strongholds urging the electorate to register in large numbers.

The Head of State has already moved to the following counties: Kiambu, Samburu, Laikipia, Murang’a and Nyeri in a bid to sensitise the youth on the exercise.
