DPP Drops Charges Against 5 Narok Leaders Accused of Incitement

The Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko has dropped charges against five leaders from Narok County, accused of incitement to violence in the region, that led to the death of one person, leaving several others injured.

Narok Senator Stephen Ole Ntutu and four Mps, Moitalel ole Kenta (Narok North), Kolei Lemein (Narok South), Patrick Ntutu (Narok West), and Johana Ng'eno (Emurua Dikir) had been accused of fueling the violence that resulted from demonstrations last year.

The leaders had planned a protest against the area governor Samauel Tunai which turned chaotic when protesters tried to break into the governor's offices by bringing down a metal gate, The Star reports.

According to The Standard the charges were dropped after the DPP failed to gather enough evidence to sustain their trial.

The DPP, through prosecutor Daniel Karuri told the court that he intends to use the five in an investigation being done to establish the circumstances of the shooting and killing of the protester during the demonstrations.

Capital Fm reports that Senior Counsel Paul Muite, the leaders' lawyer told the court that the leaders will be considering suing the state for the mistreatment they underwent during the arrest and interrogations by the police.
