Police in Litein, Kericho County have launched investigations into an incident where a woman is suspected to have accidentally killed her three-week old girl after a drinking spree.
21-year old Mercy Chepkirui reportedly arrived home at 2am from a night out, and slept on the same bed as the infant. However, she woke up the following day to find the lifeless body of her child on the bed.
Confirming the incident, Bureti Deputy OCPD Jackson Lolomodoni said that the toddler had signs of suffocation indicating that Mercy could have slept on her.
“The body of the child had visible signs of bleeding from her nose and mouth, and the body had turned pale due to lack of air,” said Lolomodoni.
According to neighbours, the mother of two is a regular drinker and had almost killed her other child in the same manner but the toddler was rescued.
The deputy police boss said that once investigations were complete, they would arrest the suspect and charge her for death of her child.
