Duale Claims Raila is Planning to Rig 2017 Elections Using Help from Michael Yard

Majority leader in the National Assembly Aden Duale on Sunday claimed that CORD leader Raila Odinga is plotting to use technology to rig the 2017 General Election.

Speaking during a press conference at the Jubilee Party headquarters in Pangani, Duale stated that Raila was working with one Michael Yard in the alleged plan to influence the outcome of the August 8 vote.

"We are aware that this same Michael Yard is the chief of International Foundation System. He was in the country during the 2013 elections and he has come again. He is not a staff of the IEBC and we are asking what is his role?," the Garissa Township MP posed.

He further stated that Mr Yard had attended an IEBC meeting some three weeks ago adding that "We have written to the IEBC that we do not want to see this Yard anywhere near its premises or even in any business they conduct".

"Raila knows that he cannot get the numbers to be the president. He wants to use Yard to be part of his scheme to use technology to rig himself as the president. We demand IEBC to provide this information by Tuesday afternoon," Duale stated.

The Majority Leader went further to poke holes on Raila’s stand that the government should strictly use the biometric voter registration (BVR) kits.

"Why is Raila insisting on BVR technology? We know he wants to use it to rig the 2017 elections. Technology can be compromised. Systems failed, they were even hacked. So why is he insisting that we do not provide for alternative voter identification and transmission of results?" Duale posed.

The Majority leader defended the decision to have "alternative" identification of voters and transmission of results in place in case technology that will be used stalls.

"Even in our homes, we have candles just in case the lights go off. If they do not, then we do not use the candles," he said.

Meanwhile, Odinga on Saturday warned Jubilee against any plot to rig the General Election in favour of President Uhuru Kenyatta.
