Duale 'Prophet of Doom' Remarks Anger Church Leaders

National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale has sparked a war with the clergy after he made unwelcome comments about their involvement with the affairs of the government.

On Sunday, Duale labelled the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) “prophets of doom” after they called for the reconstitution of the Judiciary and IEBC ahead of next year's elections.

In a rejoinder, NCCK on Monday came out guns blazing at Duale, terming him an agent of violence for resisting fundamental changes in the Electoral body.

Led by Nyanza Council of Church leaders chairman Bishop Washington Ogonyo-Ngede and deputy Julius Otieno, they expressed their fury for being termed as “prophets of doom”.

“Duale has started a war the government cannot win. You cannot fight the church, God’s temple, and go unpunished. Let Duale revisit what happened to former Ugandan leader Iddi Amin-Dada when he launched a war against the church,” Otieno said.

“The IEBC must be reconstituted to avert possible violence in 2017. Jubilee, through Duale, has missed the point by calling the men of God prophets of doom,” Ngede said.

On Monday, a section of the clerics from Western Kenya heavily faulted the combatant Jubilee leader even as a planned sit in by the Opposition to force IEBC Commissioners out of office turned ugly.

Riot police were forced to use teargas to disperse the protesting crowd that had gathered demanding the resignation of Issack Hassan and his team of commissioners.

Last week, the National Council of Churches of Kenya supported the disbandment of the IEBC saying that the commissioners had lost credibility to supervise the next polls.

Secretary General Canon Peter Karanja called for the inclusion of all stakeholders and political players in reconstituting the poll body.

The clerics said what Kenyans wanted was a peaceful election.

“Kenya cannot afford another wave of violence or police intervention to restrain a disgruntled citizenry from systemic electoral malfunctions,” stated NCCK.
