Duale Team Stops Ababu's Motion

Budalangi Member of Parliament Ababu Namwamba's 50 per cent pay cut motion has been rejected.

During a meeting on Tuesday, the House Business Committee refused to create time to discuss the motion that was filed last Monday.

“We did not see reasonable grounds to allocate a motion time for debate when its intention is clear that it is populist,” National Assembly Majority leader Aden Duale.

Duale stated that the decision was made unanimously adding that the Committee only considered serious business.

Namwamba had filed the motion with the Speaker, which aimed at cutting salaries of the President, Deputy President, Members of Parliament, Governors, Senators, Members of County Assembly (MCAs), Commissioners and Judges by 50 percent.

The MP defended himself saying that his motion was not populist but just, moral, nobel and timely.

“It is apparent that many who have rushed to oppose this motion have not taken time to appreciate its full import. By passing the motion, Parliament will not be usurping the role of effecting the changes in public service remuneration. No, Parliament will have 'spoken' as the national voice of citizens, the collective conscience of the nation,” he said.

Namwamba had proposed the motion arguing that if effected, the money could ease the wage bill and even allow for the settling of the teachers' pay dispute.
