Education CS Fred Matiang’i Calls for Investigation Into Sh300 Billion Free Primary and Secondary Education Programme

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has announced that he will take action against mismanagement and embezzlement of the free Primary and Secondary education funds.

Speaking at Mary Hill Girls during Prize Giving Day, Dr Matiang’i stated that the Education ministry would set up a team to investigate the usage of funds received by schools since inception.

Matiang’i regretted the lack of integrity in the management of school finances that has seen part of the funds looted by education officers.

“I would rather not be Cabinet Secretary for Education instead of presiding over theft of resources,” declared Matiang’i.

He noted that the government had injected over Sh300 Billion in the free education programme but complained that had been looted or mismanaged over the years.

The CS highlighted that although the government had pumped billions of shillings into the sector, a number of schools had not attained the desired 1:1 student to book ratio.

Matiang’i explained that the funds being channelled towards the programme were sufficient to provide an ecosystem fit to provide quality education at an affordable cost.

He also pointed out that Kenya was seventh among the countries that spend the largest chunk of their Gross Domestic Product on education but had little to show for it over the years.
