Education CS Fred Matiang'i Given 7 Days by Wilson Sossion to Release Free Education Funds

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has been given a seven-day ultimatum by the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Wilson Sossion to release the free education funds for both primary and secondary schools.

In a letter directed to the CS and dated February 1, Sossion stated that it had been a month since schools re-opened but they were yet to receive the funds.

According to the Secretary General, the delay was hurting schools and was almost paralysing school activities across the country.

"It is difficult to procure tuition supplies and finance first term activities, such as drama festivals, and ball games as your ministry continues to withhold the funds," part of the letter read.

Mr Sossion noted that it is the full responsibility of Dr Matiang'i to ensure timely disbursement of funds to schools for smooth running.

In March 2015, the government came up with regulations that were gazetted, setting the boarding school fees at Sh53,554 per year, day schools at Sh9,374 per year and Sh37,210 annually for special schools.

The government is now supposed to pay for each primary school pupil Sh1,420 per year, while secondary school students receive Sh12,860 each year for tuition.
