Employers Risk Jail Term For Paying The Help Less Than Sh 10,000 Monthly

A new law is seeking to increase the salaries of house helps by 12 per cent.

The increase brings the new monthly salary to Sh10,954 from last year's Sh 9,781.

In a legal notice by acting Labour Secretary Raychelle Omamo, domestic workers have also been granted compulsory weekly off days and overtime compensation.

Business Daily reports that the workers have been given a mandatory weekly 48- hour break.

Failure to grant the break, employers face a punitive option of paying the house help at the rate of Sh 527 per day or an additional Sh 4,216 a month.

The new law applies in all major cities in the country.

Employers will also be required to make contributions to the NSSF pension scheme and NHIF medical cover of Sh200 and Sh400 per month respectively.

Employers failing to adhere to the above requirements could end up in prison for three months or part with a Sh 50,000 fine.

The law comes as a relief to most domestic workers some of whom are paid a meager salary.
