Equity Bank in Mandera Bombed, Police Officer Killed

A branch of Equity bank in Mandera was on Monday morning attacked by suspected militia group Al Shabaab.

According to reports, the terrorist launched the explosive at the bank and two hotels in Mandera town.

Confirming the incident, Mandera County Commissioner Frederick Shisia divulged that a Kenya Police reservist was killed during the attack on one of the hotels located near the Deputy Governor Omar Mohamed Maalim's house.

"We believe the assailants were targeting to attack Jabane guesthouse, where they thought could be accommodating some non-local guests, but there were none during the attack," Mr Shisia said.

Security agents in the area engaged in a shootout with the terrorists who escaped the scene. The officer was killed during the confrontation.

The bank had one of its walls destroyed and windows shattered.

Police and the Kenya Defence Forces have sealed off the bank and the surrounding area in search of other explosives that could have been placed.
