EXCLUSIVE: Official Speaks on 'Raila Food Poisoning at Gachagua's Burial'

Since the shocking news that Opposition leader Raila Odinga had suffered food poisoning emerged, the main subject of debate and huge speculation has been where the former Prime Minister consumed food that got him ill.

Coming a day after Odinga was in Nyeri County attending the burial of former Governor Nderitu Gachagua, some Kenyans speculated he must have been affected by the food he ate at the ceremony.

Others poked fun by sharing memes on social media insinuating what type of food he might have eaten in the Central Kenya region, hence, fell ill.

On Friday, however, an official present at the ceremony told Kenyans.co.ke that the ODM chief never ate at Gachagua's burial.

The source who sought anonymity divulged that immediately after the former Nyeri Governor was laid to rest, Mr Odinga left the venue.

The official added that President Uhuru Kenyatta also did not eat at the burial.

"Mr Odinga left immediately the formal ceremony was over. Social media rumours that Raila ate contaminated food at Gachagua's burial are not true as he never ate anything. President Kenyatta also left immediately and never ate the food prepared for the guests,” the official stated.

The shocking news of Odinga's food poisoning sparked wild reactions, especially on social media, with many eager to know circumstances surrounding the occurrence.

On Thursday, Odinga's handlers told The Standard that they suspect he might have suffered food poisoning after having a meal at a city club where he frequents.

A group of journalists later caught up with Odinga at a local hotel, and when they asked him about the food poisoning he said he did not know where it happened.

"I was feeling uncomfortable in the course of the day...it got worse and in the evening, I was taken to hospital where the head of the hospital Dr (Dan) Gikonyo got a number of experts and did a bit of examination and found that it was food poisoning," Odinga mentioned.
