Family in Sh4 Million Debt After Child's Fall from Building

A family in Nairobi's Kayole Estate was left with a Sh4 Million debt that accrued over a period of six weeks when their son was hospitalised.

The eight-year-old who had fallen from a four-storey building while playing, was rushed to Mater Hospital for further treatment after seeking help from a local dispensary and Mama Lucy Hospital.

According to the child's mother, Felister Muthoka, it was at Mater that doctors discovered, Samuel Mumo's brain had severely been damaged and that his legs were also broken.

The boy who had earlier on been convulsing and bleeding profusely from his mouth, was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where he waited to go under the knife.

Samuel's condition improved after 32 days in the ICU and was transferred to the general ward where he could now breathe normally and attempted to talk.

The fate of the boy was however sealed, when he began convulsing again while he was being fed by a nurse. His nails are said to have turned black and his fever shot off the roof, the Standard reports.

"Everything was happening fast. I could feel his heart beating so hard against his chest. Doctors came and tried everything. Then his heart beat got weak, like a distant whisper. A few minutes later, Samuel left us...." said Ms Muthoka.

Muthoka, a vegetable vendor in Kayole, recounted how fast their lives had changed from the day she was informed about her son's accident until the day they lost him.

Kayole residents blamed the death of young Mumo on contractors who failed to put up safety measures in the buildings within the estate.

The family appealed to well wishers for help in order to raise the Sh4 Million debt before laying Samuel to rest.
