Fire Guts Down Gikomba Market

UPDATE: Nairobi police commandant Benson Kibue has reportedly said the fire that gutted down the stalls could have been caused by arsonists.

Traders at Nairobi's Gikomba market have been left counting millions in losses after fire razed down their property at the market.

The fire is said to have started at about 3 am from the section facing Landhies Road Capital reports.

Efforts to contain the fire have been hampered by the narrow paths in the market causing the fire to spread on for more than 5 hours.

As at 8 am fire engines were still battling the inferno which destroyed hundreds of stalls, leaving owners in shock.

According to Citizen Digital fire engines arrived at the scene but later ran out of the water.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established.
