Florence Mutua Walks Out of Parliament After Sexual Offences Amendment Bill is Rejected

Busia Women Representative Florence Mutua on Wednesday sparked drama in the National Assembly after the Sexual Offences Amendment Bill was dismissed.

The Bill, which was sponsored by Ms Mutua, was reportedly shot down by a section of male legislators who voted against it.

Following the defeat of the proposal, the women rep is said to have walked out of the chamber while waving the Bill to her counterparts.

The MPs are said to have watched her in bemusement as she angrily made her way out of the chamber.

The Amendment Bill, which she had relentlessly supported, provided for re-introduction of sex education in schools as well as creating a special unit of police officers to investigate sexual offences.

It also sought to criminalise among other issues ogling, bodily contact especially in public places and restricting solving of sex offences out of court.

Such proposals are said to have rubbed most of the legislators the wrong way, hence, they reportedly voted in unison to kick it out.

Earlier on, during debate on the amendments, several lawmakers raised an issue with some of the clauses with most outrightly expressing dissatisfaction with the Bill.

Mutua and a number of other MPs especially her female counterparts had put up a spirited fight in a bid to have the Bill sail through the House.
