Former Police Commander Back from Exile

A former high ranking Administration Police (AP) officer who fled the country fearing for his life over information he allegedly had on post-election violence has returned home.

Oku Kaunya, a former AP Training College Commander went into exile shortly before the start of the cases against six Kenyans at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Mr Kaunya and his family left in 2010 reportedly after he was involved in a power struggle with his boss, Kinuthia Mbugua now the Nakuru Governor.

According to a report by the Star, Mbugua interdicted Kaunya, who was his second in command, for allegedly ousting his authority.

Mr Kaunya is said to have ignored taking up new office as Nyanza Deputy PC following a reshuffle of the provincial administration by former President Mwai Kibaki before leaving the country.

The former AP boss was ranked by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) as a 'high profile witness’ in the cases at the Hague.

His return comes barely a month after the case against Deputy President William Ruto and Joshua arap Sang was declared a mistrial.

On Sunday, he was welcomed back into the country in a festival that was attended by Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong and Women Representative Florence Mutua.

“God had specific plans for me when I fled the country, leaving behind my wife Millicent. I thank God my children are okay abroad. East or West, home is best. My heart still feels home,” Kaunya said.

Kaunya thanked his father, the Governor and others for their effort in appealing for his security to enable him return home.
