Former Maseno University Student Charged with Recruiting Primary School Boys into AL Shabaab

Student-turned- imam said to have been at Maseno University before being expelled was arraigned in a Mombasa court for allegedly recruiting teenagers into terror group- Al Shabaab.

Samuel Wanjala Wabwile now going by the name Salim Mohamed Wabwile according to reports, was expelled from Maseno after stabbing a fellow student.

Last month, the suspect was arrested for allegedly recruiting seven boys from Gadini Primary School into Al Shabaab.

The court heard that Wabwile committed the crime while working as an Imam at Liwatoni Mosque in Ganjoni.

While in custody, the suspect had tried to get a bail under false claims- The Standard reports.

He had allegedly lied to the court that he was seeking bail so he could and sit for exams at Maseno, only for the prosecution to later find out that he had been expelled a while back.

The suspect is set to remain in police custody after the prosecution cited that releasing him on bond could pose danger to witnesses in the case.

He also currently doesn’t have a lawyer as the court was not able to assign him a state lawyer.

The trial will begin on September 17, 2015.
