Former Minister's Schoolmate Misses Form 1 Place

A 72-year-old man from Msambweni is crying foul after failing to secure a Form One place in a public school, despite scoring 299 marks in the 2015 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination.

Mr Athman Rimo, who is a former chief  at Mwambungo village, was hoping to receive a letter to join a secondary school but did not secure a place, for what he believes is due to his age.

Speaking to journalists from his home in Ukunda, Mr Rimo expressed his disappointment, since he believed he had attained marks to guarantee him entry to high school.

“I deserved to get a school because there several students who could not even get the average mark of 250,” he was quoted by the Nation.

The ex-administrator dropped out from Shimo la Tewa High School in Form One in 1961, where he was schoolmates with former ministers Chirau Ali Mwakwere and Marsden Madoka.

Frustrated by his misfortune, the old man has decided to start private secondary school studies at Friends Goodwill Centre in Ukunda, under the support of his teacher Peter Jolly.

Meanwhile, Rimo has warned that his miss out of a place in form one, would discourage his other agemates who had gone back to school.

The country has been registering an increasing number of elderly people returning to class, since the introduction of free primary education in 2003.
