A form 3 student at Marindi Secondary school in Nyamira County committed suicide on Sunday, over what is said to be humiliation by a school teacher.
Judy Nyanchama allegedly committed suicide after a text message conversation with her boyfriend was read out to other students during the school parade.
According to Monica Nyamongo a caretaker at the school, the form three student was confronted by two teachers who asked her to surrender her mobile phone after the teachers caught wind of a student using a mobile phone in school.
The caretaker who refutes claims that the messages were read out in the parade, claims that the girl first declined to surrender the phone which led to the teachers threatening to send her home and it is then that she committed suicide.
However school students who spoke to NTV maintain that the girl's conversation with her boyfriend was read out during the parade, which led to the girl committing suicide by jumping into the school sewage.
This comes as a latest incident of what is appearing to be inappropriate measures being used by teachers to punish students who commit offenses.
A headteacher last week reportedly punished a class eight girl for being late to school by first ordering other male students to strip her naked before he caned her.
