Government Attacked Over N.Eastern Education Crisis

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has criticized President Uhuru Kenyatta's Government over the education crisis in North-Eastern Kenya.

The Opposition demanded that the government issues special examinations to students in Northern Kenya, as a stop-gap emergency measure.

The crisis was triggered by a spate of attacks targeting teachers, and learning institutions in the region. Some of the teachers operating in the area declined to teach.

Led by Budalangi legislator Ababu Namwamba, ODM faulted the Jubilee administration's commitment to ensuring access to education for all learners.

“ODM believes, the Jubilee administration has failed in its mandate of ensuring better education for all. It has proved its incapability of handling the teacher crisis in Northern Kenya'', read the statement in part.

The opposition demanded the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to work with the County Governments in a bid to come up with a comprehensive and sustainable solution to the education crisis.

This comes even as the Government has taken its stance on the issue, announcing that there will be no special exams for the Northern Kenya regions - Garissa, Mandera and Wajir.

The government was further urged to pay teachers the newly awarded 50-60 % pay hike.

The opposition's calls come in the wake of a nationwide teachers strike, after the Government failed to meet their deadline.

The unions representing the teachers had given their employer until Monday midnight, to deposit balances from their newly awarded salary increment. However, the demand was not met.
