Government Dismisses Claims of Registering Ugandans and Ethiopians as Voters

The government has dismissed allegations by the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) leader Raila Odinga that it has been registering Ugandan and Ethiopian nationals as voters.

The Ministry of Interior spokesman, Mwenda Njoka, described Odinga's claims as outrightly malicious and meant to undermine the voter registration process.

Njoka noted that Odinga should have provided enough evidence to substantiate the allegations, and if so, record a statement regarding the same.

"If indeed there was anything like that, the respectable thing the former Prime Minister ought to do is record a statement with the relevant authorities so that action can be taken," read the statement.

The same was refuted by President Uhuru Kenyatta who told Kirinyaga residents that Odinga's allegations were meant to create chaos since he had sensed defeat.

“These claims he is making that we are registering foreigners are just a ploy to cause chaos and reject results if he loses elections. Let us send him home by 6 am," stated Kenyatta.

On its part, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) denied the allegations stating: "The allegation that BVR kits are being used to register strangers is strange. We can account for all our kits, personnel and the stations."

The Opposition leader on Tuesday alleged that the National Intelligence Service (NIS) was being used to secretly register voters on behalf of the Jubilee government ahead of the August 8 General Election.

Mr Odinga noted that the spy agency was taking BVR kits across the Kenyan borders and registering Ugandans and Ethiopians.

"NIS interference in the current voter registration involves taking BVR kits across our borders into Uganda and Ethiopia and assisting citizens of the two countries to register in a Kenyan election process. The agency is also assisting citizens of these neighbouring countries to acquire Kenyan identification documents then helping them cross into Kenya and register as voters," he added.

According to the former Prime Minister, NIS was also involved in the double registration of voters that came to light after the poll body kicked off the second and last mass voter registration drive.

Additionally, Odinga claimed that the spy agency conducted illegal registration of youth under the National Youth Service (NYS) program.
