Government Gazettes 7 Zones in Laikipia County as Dangerous and Disturbed

The government through the Ministry of Interior and National Coordination has gazetted seven zones in Laikipia County as 'dangerous and disturbed'.

A gazette notice signed by Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Joseph Nkaissery names Rumuruti, Ol Moran, Kirimon, Marmanet, Mukogodo East, Segera, Mithiga and Matuiku as the most dangerous areas.

Police operations have been ongoing in the area and all indications show that the operations will be extended to try and curb the runaway insecurity in the region.

The CS indicated that the decision to gazette the areas was arrived at after a series of consultations with the national security council.

The insecurity in the county has been fuelled by the ongoing drought which has seen herders invade personal ranches in search of pasture and water for their livestock.

While speaking to the Daily Nation, Laikipia County Commissioner Mr Onesmas Kyatha indicated that areas declared dangerous will see a rise in security personnel to deal with the armed pastoralists who have invaded ranches like; Ol Maisor and Sosian.

The gazetting of the dangerous zones comes only a week after a British ranch owner Tristan Voorspuy was shot and killed in his Sosian ranch.

Laikipia County has for the past one month faced insecurity issues which have caused deaths, destruction of properties and vast migration of residents who are moving to safer areas.
