Government Reverses Payment Made to Medical Interns' Accounts

Medical interns posted to government hospitals across the country have protested a move by the government to retrieve money that had been paid into their accounts as salary for the last five months.

Confirming the incident, Nairobi Branch Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) chairman Dr Thuranira Kaugiria stated that the union had approached the Ministry of Health to resolve the issue amicably.

"Each intern doctor had received around Sh500,000 into their accounts on Tuesday and Wednesday. However, the money was recalled by the ministry between Thursday and Friday and some doctors even had part of their savings retrieved. The union had not been told why the ministry made the decision to recall the money," Kaugiria noted.

However, banks confirmed to the union that they retrieved the money acting on directions by the Ministry of Health.

The KMPDU Nairobi Branch chairman confirmed that payment disperities were also witnessed among the doctors.

KMPDU has given the ministry up to Friday to sort out the issue failure to which the union would take appropriate actions.

Such actions could include pursuing the matter in court, dialogue or any other action as decided by the union.
