Government Upholds Ban on Export of Kenyan Domestic Workers to Jordan

Kenyans domestic workers will no longer be recruited and transported to Jordan, as the government has banned the export.

This follows claims of mistreatment of the said workers, especially in the Middle East countries.

The ban was first put in place in October last year.

Speaking to the National Assembly's Committee on Labour and Social Welfare on Thursday, officials from the Recruiting Agents Association of Jordan sought to have the ban lifted.

They said that they had been stopped from recruiting Kenyans due to a diplomatic misunderstanding between the two countries.

The officials asked the  House Committee chaired by Matungu MP David Were, to push the government to reconsider its decision.

The committee members however did not buy into the association's denial of mistreatment claims.

“We are receiving many distress calls from those already in Jordan. Do not make the situation in Jordan look so good,” said Kipipiri MP Samuel Gichigi.

Embakasi MP Irshad Sumra however admitted that some Kenyans have been found guilty of various activities that have gotten them into trouble.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs maintained that the ban will remain in place until a bilateral agreement is reached by the two governments ,over the welfare of Kenyan workers.
