Government's Strategy to Rescue IDPs amid El-Nino Scare

The Government has rolled out plans to help Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) amid the looming El-Nino rains predicted to hit the country as of October.

Deputy President William Ruto said that the Government would release Sh1.1 Billion to the IDPs who are yet to be resettled after they were displaced from their homes during the 2007-2008 Post elections violence.

Ruto indicated that 5387 households were set to receive the payments so as to facilitate settlemement across the region in Mahi Mahiu, Gilgil, Njoro, Eldoret and Rongai (in Nakuru) areas.

The DP added that the government's vision was to ensure that every person was resettled before the El-Nino rains struck.

The government has been vigilant to put up safety measures throughout the country since the floods were forecasted in September. It went to allocate Sh5 Billion from its contingency fund and asked counties to do the same so as to avert the effects of the rains.

Last month, the Deputy President stated that 70,000 National Youth Service personnel would also be dispatched to help in the recovery and evacuation processes.

As part of the preparation, Government also warned residents especially in the lower Tana, Nandi Hills and Central Kenya, specifically Murang’a County of mudslides and started the relocation process.
