Governor Declares 'War' on Ugandans at Migingo

Migori Governor Okoth Obado has promised to lead county residents to Migingo and face Ugandans harassing Kenyans at the Lake Victoria island.

Obado protested the alleged hostility by Ugandan authorities on his fellow countrymen, asserting that he would not allow foreigners to assault his poeple.

"Even President Museveni knows Migingo is in Kenyan territory and we will not allow his police officers to beat up our people. Citizens of Migori are very bitter and we will storm the island to face the Ugandans," the governor was quoted by The Standard.

While addressing a forum in Migori, Obado decried that his people were tired of arbitrary arrests, torture and detention undertaken by the Ugandan police manning the Island.

"The situation is getting worse when even our security officers and civil servants including election registration clerks are arrested," he added.

The infuriated governor called on the Kenyan and Ugandan authorities to publicise details of the survey meant to acertain the ownership of Migingo Island which is claimed by the two countries.

Obado's sentiments come after Kenyan electoral officials sent to register voters at the island were reportedly arrested by Ugandan police.

It also emerged that a Kenyan administrator and a police officer were roughed up by Ugandan security agents, who questioned their presence at Migingo Island.
