Governor's Bodyguard Killer Sentenced to Death

The Mombasa High Court has sentenced to death a member of the outlawed Mombasa Republican Council (MRC), after he was found guilty of killing a Governor's bodyguard.

Appearing before Justice Martin Muya, Faraji Konde, was found responsible for the death of Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi's guard in 2012.

Justice Muya ruled that Konde had participated in chaos that broke out in Kilifi during a rally addressed by Kingi, who was a Minister at that time. During the mayhem, four people lost their lives while 12 others were wounded.

In the Wednesday ruling, three other suspects connected to another terror attack were acquitted after the judge ruled that their charges had not been proven.

Kingi's aide succumbed to injuries he sustained while trying to protect the County boss during the violent commotion which broke out after a group of goons, believed to belong to MRC, disrupted a political meeting castigating the then Cabinet Member.

In a separate case, Justice Muya set free two suspects who had been charged with 60 counts of murder after being linked to the 2014 Mpeketoni attacks in which 60 residents were killed.

The judge blamed the police for carrying out shallow investigations, saying that the murder charges were not proven beyond reasonable doubt.
