Grief as Three-Year-Old is Killed by School Bus in Nyayo Estate

Three-year-old Bradley Onyango had attended school for only two months and his passion for education made his whole family excited about his approaching first exam in the neighborhood kindergarten, where he had first learnt the joy of reading.

Little did they know that the cheerful toddler would not live to see the day.

Bradley was killed in an accident that took place when a school bus run him over- right outside the building where his home was.

The school bus from Good Testimony Kindergarten had just dropped Bradley and his five-year-old brother- Jason Onyango from school when the tragedy occurred.

While what exactly happened is not clear, contradictory statements continue surrounding the accident.

Witnesses told Citizen TV that minders who usually walk the children to the corridor did not do so and the bus driver, assuming the space behind the bus was clear, reversed into the boy.

A representative from the school however told the station that the minders handed the children over to the house help before leaving.

She further claimed that the playful Bradley hid under the bus and the driver hit him as he was leaving the estate, being unaware of the child's whereabouts.

The statement contradicted with the one given by the driver to the police, as he had reported that the accident took place when he hit the boy as he was reversing.

The school later withdrew its statement when the contradiction was pointed out.

Speaking to The Standard, the family house help said the bus dropped the two children at around 1:30 pm which was earlier than the usual 2 pm.

She had gone to buy milk and was on her way back when she heard a neighbor scream.

She rushed to the spot only to find the almost lifeless body in a pool of blood.

Together with a teacher, they rushed him to hospital in a neighbor's car.

Bradley's parents got the news and left their places of work, both within Nairobi Central Business District and rushed to the clinic.

Unfortunately, Bradley had succumbed to the injuries- a young life taken too soon.

The death has hit the family hard; Bradley's heartbroken parents including an expectant mother have been left trying to console their two other sons, especially Jason who although may not understand the details, saw his brother lay in a pool of blood.
