Hezron Awiti Reaches Deal with Mijikenda Community to Ouster Governor Joho in Mombasa Elections

Interesting revelations have emerged of a private meeting held between Wiper Party Gubernatorial aspirant in MombasaHezron Awiti and the Mijikenda community leaders to plot the ouster of Governor Hassan Joho in the upcoming polls.

While making the announcement, the Mijikenda spokesman Ibrahim Kai stated that Awiti had entered into the deal with his community which forms a huge percentage of the voters in the county.

According to Kai, the politician had a three-pillar Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the community in which he promised to serve for one term.

"The first pillar of the Memorandum of Understanding is that Mr Awiti serves as Governor for one term only. The second is that he must be deputised by a member of our community who will run for the seat after Mr Awiti’s term," Kai said.

Mr Awiti also committed to have the leader of the Majority in his Government be from the Mijikenda community, which complained that Governor Joho had neglected them after ascending to power.

"The agreement is that members of our community who form the biggest voting bloc in Mombasa should be given opportunities in commensurate with the numbers such as tenders, employment and government openings," Kai noted.

Mr Awiti mentioned that the pact was a huge step for the Coat region noting that: "I will reduce the land rates and taxes on small scale enterprises in order to lower the cost of doing business in Mombasa. My government will allocate 20 percent of its revenue to religious organizations which will take care of those affected by narcotic drugs and other social programmes."

At the same time, a representative of the Kamba community Daniel Mwange divulged that his tribesmen at the Coast were set to enter a similar deal with Awiti this week.

"We supported the current government in 2013 but have not benefited. That is why we will enter into an agreement with Mr Awiti so that we get a stake in his government," Mwange said.
