History as Kenyan Priest Walks for 2000 Kilometres

A Catholic priest made history on Saturday after completing a 2000-Kilometre journey where he walked from Kakamega County to Mombasa then back to Nairobi in 69 days.

44-year-old Father Maloba Wesonga of Regina Caeli Catholic Church in Karen, began his journey on March 13 in Mumias, Kakamega County, and trekked along major highways to Nairobi, then proceeded to Mombasa and finally back to Nairobi where he was warmly received by members of his church.

“We have achieved that, having taken the 2,000KM to the different churches where I received the different sacraments. It has been one great experience; one true journey of faith” he said.

The Man of God was received at the Regina Caeli church by a representative of Cardinal John Njue who celebrated mass to thank God for the successful journey.

According to Father Maloba, the tough walk was in accordance with a call by Pope Francis that the faithful need to take a spiritual pilgrimage this year by engaging in a “Journey of Faith”.

The Nairobi-based priest also used the walk to fundraise Sh250 Million required for the construction of a bigger church to replace the current one in Karen.

On whether he managed the raise the huge amount, Father Maloba said; "We have made quite a headway in terms of the donations that have been made by people of goodwill and parishioners. And we look forward to a continued donation or remission of pledges and donations".

During the tough walk, the priest and his team of 10 braved heavy traffic, tough weather conditions, disorganised eating patterns, diseases and sore feet to achieve their goal.

The team reportedly walked for an average of 50km per day, with short breaks in between, and rested at night.

There were also three vehicles accompanying the Father and his team which were branded with messages of the walk's theme, “Journey of Faith”. The team of 10 who included Maloba's parents were at liberty to travel by car.

Father Maloba expressed faith that within the shortest time possible, they would manage to raise the Sh250 Million they need.
