How 2016 KCPE Candidates Performed

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i on Thursday released results of the 2016 Kenya Certificate of Primary Eduction (KCPE) exam and announced some major changes.

Here are some of the major highlights from the results announcement made at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD):

1. The top candidate in the 2016 KCPE exam scored 439 marks which was a decline from last year's score where the top candidate managed 449 out of 500.

2. The number of students who scored 400 marks and above dropped from last years 7,560 to 5,190 in 2016.

3. No candidate would miss his/her results in 2016 compared to 7,809 who did not get their results.

4. Only 21 cases of malpractice were reported – all of which were attempted and were dealt with.

5. Matiang'i announced that there will no longer be private exam centres. All private candidates will be required to sit for exams in the Ministry of Education institutions to curb cases of impersonation.

6. Selection of candidates will begin on Thursday, December 1.

7. All Form One candidates will report to their respective schools on January 9, 2017.

8. Government to pay exam fees for candidates in both private and public primary schools from 2017.

9. All candidates who got 400 marks and above will go the National Schools they chose.

10. Form One admission will be done electronically with the help of the ICT Ministry.

The Education CS caught the nation by surprise following an impromptu announcement that the 2016 KCPE results would be released on Thursday, December 1 and not on December 8, as earlier reported.
