How International Media Covered CORD Protests

CORD protests against the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) caught the attention of various international media after the Monday riots turned chaotic.

UK's Daily Mail splashed a 25-word title describing the ruthless manner in which the police handled the Opposition supporters and leaders.

“The terrifying moment free speech is crushed by brutal Kenyan riot police: Demonstrators calling for election reform are rounded up and subjected to horrific violence,” the headline read.

On the other hand, Telegraph reported that there was violence in Kenya after police tried to block demonstrations against corrupt IEBC officials.

“Mayhem in Kenya as police tackle protest over ‘corrupt’ poll officials,” Telegraph indicated.

US FoxNews channel also highlighted police brutality on CORD supporters during the countrywide protests.

“Kenya: Police fire tear gas, make arrests during protests,” FoxNews title read.

While the International media has previously been largely bashed for apparently misreporting local incidents, this time, the local media was faulted for failing to give prominence to the police brutality witnessed during the anti-IEBC protests.

The front pages of three national papers on Tuesday featured news on how CORD leader Raila Odinga's car was hit during the riots.

“Raila car hit as CORD protests turn violent,” Daily Nation headline read.

“Raila's car hit as demos turn ugly,” The Standard said.

“Raila's car hit as CORD goes to court,” The Star noted.

The manner in which the anti-riot police handled the protesters was highly criticised as videos and pictures from the demos showed the use of excessive force to repulse the crowd.
