How Passports Could be Used to Rig Elections - MP

Tongaren Member of Parliament Eseli Simiyu has expressed concern over the voter registration process by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) ahead of the 2017 General Election.

Mr Simiyu, who is also FORD-Kenya Secretary General, stated that IEBC should stop registering voters using passports in order to avoid rigging in the elections.

The legislator indicated that anyone was eligible to get a passport including persons below the age of 18 years, therefore, the electoral body must only use the National Identification cards.

“The passport can be given to anyone but the IDs are only issued to people aged 18 and above, who are constitutionally eligible to vote,” Simiyu was quoted by the Standard.

During the registration, the Commission requires eligible voters to present either their IDs or Passports.
