How Uhuru Saved Activist, Wangui Mbatia, Dennis Itumbi Reveals

Diaspora and Digital Communications Director at State House official, Dennis Itumbi, has revealed a letter in which an ailing woman expressed her gratitude to President Uhuru Kenyatta for saving her life.

The lady identified as Wangui Mbatia Nyauma was fighting Cholangiocarcinoma (cancer of the gall bladder and cancer of the bile ducts) and had been given three months to live when President Kenyatta came in to support her.

According to the alleged note to the President, Ms Wangui said: "H.E. saved my life when I had been given only 3 months to live. I have fought two of the most aggressive forms of liver cancer. The generosity of H.E. ensured that my treatment costs were paid for."

Itumbi brought the letter to light on Saturday morning after the demise of Ms Wangui, a well-known activist and a mother of one.

After Mr Kenyatta helped her, Wangui is said to have written the note offering her friendship to the Head of State.

"I cannot repay the debt of gratitude I owe, but I am well enough now and all I am asking for is an opportunity to try. I am well enough now. I want to be of service. I am not asking for anything in return, just an opportunity to be a friend to one who was a friend in my need," the letter read.

The news of Wangui's death was met with great sadness by the members of the civil society who eulogised her as a fearless fighter of people's rights.

The activist leaves behind a husband, Polycarp Masaki and a daughter, Celine.
