Human Rights Africa Moves to Court Seeking to Block Raila Odinga From 2017 General Election
A Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) has moved to court seeking to block ODM leader Raila Odinga from vying in the August 8 General Election.
Human Rights Africa on Wednesday filed the case at the High Court questioning Odinga's degree which is said to have been acquired between 1965 and 1970.
Through lawyer Robert Onyango, the organisation wants the ODM leader compelled to produce evidence that he holds a Master of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
It further seeks an order to have the Commission for University Education (CUE) verify the former Prime Minister's academic credentials.
According to the body, Odinga claims to have acquired his Master's in 1970, yet the institution he attended only became a university recently.
“He has only produced a certificate acquired in the years of 1962-1965, Certificate of Higher Education from Herder Institute, German Democratic Republic, with competence in German Language.
"The lack of clarity emanates from the fact that the university in which the 1st respondent claims to have attended only recently became a university and hence could not, by all means, have conferred a degree in 1970,” reads the court papers.
The NGO also wants Odinga declared unfit to hold any public office questioning his integrity threshold and suitability to contest the upcoming polls over allegations of tainted public service record.
The petitioner cited complaints raised by the CEO of Dominion Farm Ltd, Calvin Burgess, who accused Odinga of frustrating him and his business after declining to fund his political activities.
The agency also wants the IEBC forced to conduct investigations on Raila's alleged involvement in the Greenfield JKIA expansion project, Triton and maize scandals in which he has been mentioned.
Further, the body is seeking to have the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission and the Director of Public Prosecutions ordered to institute charges against the ODM chief.
