IDPs Dispersed by Police While Heading to State House

A group of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who were marching to State House on Wednesday morning were dispersed and allegedly roughed up by police.

The group is said to have camped at Uhuru Park and after mobilising themselves started their walk towards the President’s official residence but were halted by police who forced them back to the park.

The officers were reportedly under strict instruction to bar them from accessing State House.

The IDPs intended to present a petition to President Uhuru Kenyatta for compensation which they claimed amounted up to Sh6 Billion.

The group, led by Nyanza IDPs Network coordinator Nelson Owegi, stated that they wanted President Kenyatta to intervene on the matter and end their 10-year wait for their compensation.

Owegi added that money released by the government in August 2016 never reached the displaced persons in Nyanza due to "bad politics".

In February, he had raised similar allegations accusing the government of delaying the payment despite the money being approved.

"The National Treasury had released Sh6 billion towards their compensation but the cash is yet to reach them. We are yet to receive the allocations to date. Over Sh4 billion of the money must have been stolen since it cannot be traced," he said.
