The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Wednesday asked all politicians to register and submit details of their campaign financing account in compliance with the Election Campaign Act, 2013.
In a press statement, IEBC said that registration of the bank account, which is meant for money to be used in campaigns, would help monitor the expenditure by politicians ahead of the 2017 elections.
“For purposes of the general election, Section 6 of the Act obligates the Commission to register “authorised persons” who are: a candidate, agent of the candidate or political party campaign financing committee.
“The authorised persons are required to open and submit the details of the campaign financing account to the Commission at the time of registration. The registration is expected to be done at least 8 months before the elections; in the case of 2017 General Election, by December 8, 2016,” part of the statement by IEBC read.
The campaign financing account will then be approved by the National Assembly.
According to the Campaign Finance Act, the expenditure by any political party in the 2017 poll should be at Sh15 Billion while presidential candidates will spend Sh5.2 Billion in the race to State House.
Governor, Senators and Women representatives will be required to spend less than Sh423 Million while Members of National and County Assemblies are allowed to spend Sh33 Million.
