IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati Declares ODM Nominations Set for April 7 Illegal

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) nominations set to start from April 7 have been declared illegal.

Making the announcement on Wednesday, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati stated that no primaries should take place before the list of participants is gazetted.

According to Chebukati, the polls body would publish the names of all aspirants on April 12, therefore, any nominations should take place after that date.

ODM had planned to run its primaries from Saturday 7 to April 23.

IEBC, on the other hand, had scheduled the primaries to run between April 13 to 26 after which parties will present a list of the successful candidates to the polls body.

The upcoming primaries have caused a rise in the political temperatures with the aspirants jostling for a chance to clinch the party's tickets for various posts.

On Monday, the Orange Party gave direct nomination certificates to a number of leaders including the Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero and his Mombasa counterpart Hassan Joho.

This sparked debate with a section of the public feeling that the move would jeopardise democracy as it barred other interested aspirants from vying in areas whose incumbent were handed the certificates.

Such a scenario was witnessed on Wednesday after nominated Senator Elizabeth Ongoro stormed ODM headquarters to protest against a decision to bar her from vying for Ruaraka parliamentary seat and awarding incumbent MP Tom Kajwang' a direct nomination.
