IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati Declares Politicians are Free to Campaign

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) boss Wafula Chebukati has declared that President Uhuru Kenyatta and CORD leader Raila Odinga are free to hold campaigns ahead of the August 8 Election.

Mr Chebukati was replying to Presidential aspirant Philip Murgor, who demanded the electoral body to restrict the two from carrying out campaigns, on grounds that it was illegal.

The IEBC Chairman stated that there was no law stopping politicians from campaigning adding that any leader was free to make their aspirations known to voters.

"Though according to our timelines the campaign for the August 8 election should start in June, there is no law that bars anyone from campaigning early. As a commission, we have no power to stop anyone from going across the country looking for voters," Chebukati said.

However, as per the IEBC guidelines, the campaigns ought to kick start on June 28th.

On Friday, Mr Murgor called on the electoral body to crack the whip on leaders conducting early campaigns highlighting that it could pose a legal challenge which might lead to the Election results being declared invalid.

Mr Kenyatta and the former Prime Minister have been holding various rallies throughout the country trying to woo Kenyans to vote for them.
