President Uhuru Kenyatta on Sunday reportedly failed to contribute money during a fundraiser at a church in his hometown Gatundu South.
The President, who was at P.C.E.A. Kimunyu Church presiding over the groundbreaking ceremony of the proposed Thiririka Presbytery office complex, stated that it would have been illegal for him to donate towards the project following the new electoral laws that came into effect on Sunday.
"For now, the law bars me from making a contribution towards this noble project but I promise that when the right time comes, we shall stand together and complete the building," Mr Kenyatta said.
Regulations by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) bar politicians from participating in harambees eight months before the General Election.
According to the law, those who are in contravention risk being disqualified from contesting in the polls.
During the ceremony, the Head of State urged Kenyans who have not registered as voters to do so in order to exercise their democratic right when the time comes.
