The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will not register Kenyans living in countries outside Africa ahead of the August 8 General Election.
Announcing the decision on Tuesday, the electoral body stated that the only Kenyans residing in foreign countries who would be enlisted as voters are those in Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda and South Africa.
The Commission, however, promised that those in other countries would be registered and allowed to vote in future exercises.
IEBC made the pronouncement while releasing numbers of those who had been enlisted as voters in the ongoing exercise set to conclude on February 14.
The polls body divulged that it had only registered 2.1 million new voters since the exercise began which translates to less than 50 percent of its target of 6 million.
At the same time, the Commission stated that it would kickstart registration of university student, adding that the deadline would not be extended after February 14.
"Student registration in universities and colleges will happen from 8th - 14th Feb 2017. There will be no extension of the voter registration period. Feb 14th, 2017 is the deadline,” IEBC maintained.
The Commission stated that upon completion of the registration exercise, all fingerprints will be matched with details of the voters to ensure no one is registered more than once.
