Joho's Letter to US Embassy to be Investigated Over Drug Trafficking Revealed

Details have emerged indicating that Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho wrote a secret letter to the US embassy offering to be investigated over drug allegations.

According to sources who spoke to a local daily, Joho offered to be investigated over multiple allegations linking him to the drug trafficking business.

“He surrendered to the US embassy his bank details, names of companies in which he was a director and invited Nairobi-based federal bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents to probe him,” the source was quoted by the Nairobian.

The source adds that the FBI agents later cleared him after they lacked any evidence into the allegations stating, “The US embassy later issued visas to his entire family and his brothers have been visiting the US since then.”

According to the source, this explains the reason why Joho travelled to the US and even met State Department officials without being arrested.

Kenyans.co.ke contacted Joho's communication director Richard Chacha, who disclosed that issue of Joho being investigated happened when the late George Saitoti was the Minister for Internal security adding that the matter was only being revived for political reasons.

"Joho was investigated a long time ago and cleared of the allegations when Saitoti was the Minister... he has been travelling to the US and this is not the first time," Chacha told this journalist.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, an official from the US embassy refused to comment on the matter but promised to call back. By the time of going to the press, the embassy had not called back.

In 2009, the then ambassador to Kenya Michael Ranneberger produced a dossier that linked Joho to the drug trafficking business, though no evidence to prove the allegations was produced.

The fight against drugs has picked up after the Akasha brothers were extradited to the US with President Uhuru Kenyatta announcing that more suspects would be arrested.
