Jubilee Abandons Plan to Use Smart Cards During Election

President Uhuru Kenyatta's Jubilee Party has been forced to make changes to its preparations for the April nominations.

The Party will now not use the highly touted smart membership cards to conduct its primaries as had earlier been planned.

According to sources from the party, the plan was shelved after concerns that some leaders were buying the cards and distributing them to supporters to gain advantage over their competitors when it comes to the voting days.

Head of Party Secretariat Raphael Tuju on Friday explained that the smart cards were meant for recruiting members but not for voting purposes adding that JP's Election Board would make a major announcement next week regarding the polls.

Jubilee members will, therefore, be required to use their national identity cards in order to participate in the April primaries.

The party explained that the move was necessitated by the fact that not all those who had been recruited using the cards would participate in the election.

A plan to use the smart cards had caused tension in the Party as various leaders raised fears over speculations that some Jubilee officials were selling them for their personal gain.

Others claimed that the cards were vulnerable to manipulation adding that counterfeits could also find their way to Jubilee members which would affect the credibility of the polls.
