Jubilee Party Aspirants Face Sh150 Million Loss Over Use of Smart Cards in Nominations

The Jubilee Party is now staring at a major crisis ahead of its nominations exercise, with the biggest dispute being the use of smart cards in the primaries.

New revelations now indicate that a good number of Jubilee aspirants who spent huge amounts to acquire the smart membership cards in preparation for the primaries are now deeply upset after it emerged that the cards might not be used after all.

According to the Jubilee vice chairman David Murathe, the party sold 7.5 million smart cards, at a price of Sh20 each - hence aspirants had parted with a whopping Sh150 Million.

In Nyeri County, Kieni Member of Parliament Kanini Kega is said to have purchased cards worth Sh800,000 to distribute to his supporters. His Counterpart in North Imenti Rahim Dawood is said to have spent Sh530,000 in the scheme tailored to increase the politician's chances of winning the primaries.

Other politicians named in the plot include Governor Mwangi Wa Iria (Murang'a), Kigumo MP Jamleck Kamau and Tigania West parliamentary aspirant John Mutunga. Previous reports had indicated that these three politicians had allegedly poured Sh7 Million into the venture by end of February.

Party officials have been reluctant to use the smart membership cards in the upcoming party primaries following complaints from majority of the party’s aspirants who claimed that the move would only favour rich politicians.

Speaking on Tuesday, Jubilee Party's Secretary General Raphael Tuju maintained that the final decision concerning use of the smart cards rested with the party's National Elections Board.
